Job Description

An Endoscopy Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. They work closely with the multidisciplinary team to prepare patients, assist during procedures, monitor patients throughout their care, and support recovery while maintaining patient dignity, safety, and comfort.

  • Assess patients before endoscopy procedures and ensure informed consent has been obtained.
  • Prepare patients physically and emotionally for their procedure.
  • Assist the endoscopist during a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, and bronchoscopy (where applicable).
  • Administer and monitor sedation in accordance with local policies and professional guidelines.
  • Continuously monitor patients' vital signs before, during, and after procedures.
  • Recognise and respond promptly to any patient deterioration or complications.
  • Provide high standards of post-procedure recovery care and discharge education.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records.
  • Ensure all endoscopy equipment is prepared, checked, cleaned, and safely decontaminated in line with infection prevention standards.
  • Adhere to JAG, CQC (where applicable), NMC, and local organisational policies.
  • Promote effective infection prevention and control practices.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and mandatory training.
  • Support junior staff, students, and newly appointed colleagues.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, consultants, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Respond appropriately in emergency situations, including medical emergencies within the endoscopy unit.

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Previous experience in endoscopy or acute clinical nursing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and decontamination procedures.
  • Competence in patient assessment and monitoring.

Desirable

  • Previous experience assisting with upper and lower GI endoscopy procedures.
  • ILS (Immediate Life Support) certification.
  • Knowledge of JAG accreditation standards.
  • Experience administering conscious sedation.
  • Experience using endoscopy reporting systems.
